Last month, advertising self-regulation was featured on a panel at Social Media Week NYC. The panel, titled “Advertising & Legal Issues in Social Media: How to Get it Right” was moderated by Terri Seligman of Frankfurt Kurnit Klein & Selz, and featured Bevin Murphy from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), Laura Brett (Staff Attorney, NAD), Katie Goldstein (Senior Staff Attorney, CARU), and Leanne Gabinelli (Staff Attorney, ERSP). The panelists discussed legal issues that arise on a variety of social media platforms, including celebrity endorsements, blogging, and how kids navigate social media.
Planning ahead, ERSP is looking forward to its upcoming 10-year anniversary celebration in May at the ERA Government Affairs Fly-In. This year, ERSP will host a half-day workshop on Tuesday, May 20th, just prior to ERA’s cocktail reception.
The half-day workshop will feature three exciting panels:
Panel 1 – ERA & Advertising Self-Regulation: The Origins of ERSP. In 2004, ERA launched the direct response industry’s advertising self-regulatory program, ERSP. Panelists will explore the state of the industry at the time of inception, and the reasons behind the program’s creation.
Panel 2 – The Future of Advertising Self-Regulation in the Direct Response Industry. As the direct response industry continues to evolve with the demands of the marketplace, emerging challenges and opportunities arise for ERSP and the self-regulatory forum. Looking ahead, what role can ERSP play in addressing the ongoing needs of the industry?
Panel 3 – Broadening the Scope: Self Regulation in the Telemarketing Industry and Beyond. While continuing its routine monitoring of traditional direct response advertising, ERSP has expanded it purview to evaluate messages communicated by new types of direct response marketing. Panelists will discuss new ERSP endeavors such as the ERSP Review Program, a voluntary program to monitor telemarketing sales calls and live seminar events.
